The lead singer, Antônio Guedes, brings forward various Brazilian influences into his compositions, blending it with others from around the globe, like Afrobeat, American soul, and Latin Jazz, with a psychedelic music twist that suggests to the audience Sergio Mendes, Jerry Garcia, Jorge Ben and Fela Kuti could all be playing in the same band.

Maracatu Pacifico Hailing from West Oakland, Maracatu Pacifico is a community-based performance group that brings Afro-Brazilian maracatu music and dance from Northeastern Brazil to the SF Bay Area.

Maracatu Pacifico was founded as Bateria Lucha and Maracatu Luta under former director Derek Wright in the early 2000s, playing at the huge anti-war marches in the run up to the Iraq war. The group was reborn as Maracatu Pacifico in 2012 under the leadership of current director Eric Hoffman, who has continued the group’s value for community and personal development through the study and performance of maracatu. Their community is a very diverse group united in our passion for this music genre.
